The Hispanic Women's Organization of Arkansas (HWOA) is a non-profit organization founded in July 1999 by a group of women, mostly Hispanic. Since then, the group has been actively involved in numerous endeavors. The growth of the Hispanic population in Northwest Arkansas has called for more participation and commitment from all its residents. Though predominantly Hispanic, HWOA members come from many backgrounds, creeds and cultures. Our diversity is our strength.
Through HWOA events, HWOA strives to enhance participation by Hispanics in the community, thus opening channels for better understanding across cultures and bringing the diverse Northwest Arkansas community together.
HWOA engages in activities that reflect our mission to advance educational opportunities for Hispanic women and their families, to celebrate and teach others about our cultures, and to become active participants in the community.
HWOA is open to men as well as women and it is not necessary to speak Spanish or to be of Hispanic heritage in order to join. HWOA's events and programs have been evolving to address the needs of the growing community.
The success of HWOA programs and events also lies in its affiliations with local, state, and national organizations. In 2001, HWOA was selected to participate in the Emerging Latino Communities Initiative (ELCI) of the National Council of La Raza (NCLR) Since October 1st, 2004, HWOA has been an affiliate of NCLR, whose mission is to reduce poverty and discrimination, and improve life opportunities for Hispanic Americans www.nclr.org
HWOA appreciates and values harmony across cultures. Our programs and community events are based on respect for existing community traditions while introducing new elements of Hispanic cultures. These events reflect our motto of "Celebrating Education, Culture, and Community."
Membership is open to anyone interested in community issues-specially those affecting the Hispanic Community- and wishing to help promote the HWOA mission. Both men and women are welcome to join. It is not necessary to speak Spanish or to be of Hispanic heritage.
